It’s an old fashioned jazz bash in downtown Monterey this weekend! Dixieland Monterey takes over the Monterey Conference Center and the Portola Hotel & Spa Friday through Sunday for some classic jazz, swing and ragtime. Performers include the High Sierra Jazz Band, Titan Hot Seven, Old Friends, Saxophobia, Big Mama Sue Quartet and many more! This year’s event will also offer dance lessons. 1 Portola Plaza, Monterey. The Sunset Center in Carmel-by-the-Sea presents the Smuin Winter Ballet this Friday and Saturday. The program is in honor of the 10th anniversary of September 11th and will portray grief, loss and love through music and choreography. The end of the performance will include Tango Palace which portrays desire and passion in the form of dance. Friday at 8pm and Saturday at 2pm, San Carlos & 9th Avenue. $55-$65.
Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss! MY Museum celebrates one of the most loved children’s authors today. Kids are going to love hanging out with the Cat in the Hat, playing Seuss inspired games and eating birthday cake! 3pm-5pm, 425 Washington Street, Monterey. Free with museum admission.
Looking for a fun and free event for the whole family this evening? Head over to Oldtown Salinas for the First Fridays Art Walk. The three-block area in Oldtown Salinas will be full of art exhibits, live music, food and children’s activities. Be sure to stop at the National Steinbeck Center along the way to see performances from Salinas High School’s String Octet and the Hartnell Jazz Band. 5pm-8pm, Main Street, Salinas. Free event.
One of Big Sur’s favorite bands performs tonight at the Fernwood Tavern. The seven piece band that makes up Songs Hotbox Harry Taught Us always put on an entertaining show with original classic country and old school rock n’roll. 9pm, 47200 Highway One, Big Sur. Free event.

The Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History supports local illustrator Erin Hunter with a launch party for her new children’s book “The Great Divide.” Erin will be on hand to answer questions about her fun animal book and will be available to sign copies. 2pm-4pm, 165 Forest Avenue, Pacific Grove. The Museum of Monterey didn’t want to feel left out of Dixieland Monterey so they decided to host the Gaucho Gypsy Jazz Band today in their theater. The sextet plays a dash of swing, roots, Klezmer and New Orleans mixed with modern day melodies. 1:30pm, 5 Custom House Plaza, Monterey. $10 to the public and $5 for members.
