After the exquisite tenderness of the Monterey AllStars the subsequent group----Soulive--- felt like an attack. I had to leave before I lost the vibe. Kurt Elling's acapello "sax" solo left me elated. I think he the finest male singer on the rock. Regina Carter played the fiddle with the heart of a great opera singer. And Kenny Barron's pianissimo and control left me breathless. For me, Malone played the evening too safe. I am a huge fan of his erudite and considered playing, but it just seemed like "jazz guitar." Hope that makes sense. Overall, a perfect night.

You're so right, this show was amazing on all levels. I've never heard a jazz violin sound quite the way it did when Regina Carter played, it was revelatory. It was a blast listening to/watching the All-Stars play "What If." It's an edgy and complex piece, and to choose it for a group like the All Stars who don't play together regularly is pretty daring. There were a couple times where it seemed like it would crash through the guardrail and explode on the rocks below, but there was magic in watching the players demonstrate their mastery by listening to, riffing with and trusting each other. Very exhilarating. I'm not sure you'll see many moments like that with bands who have played together a lot, so it was really fun.
