Biking Monterey; temporary bridge at Pfeiffer Big Sur
A writer from the Portland Oregonian cycled the Monterey Peninsula with Velo Club Monterey. His article has worthwhile tips about riding with locals in any city, as well as great highlights on the various cycling opportunities in Monterey County.
Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park will have a temporary bridge in place by Memorial Day, opening up access to the main campground at the park. It probably won’t be as beautiful as the historic Weyland bridge and other projects from the Civilian Conservation Corps as seen in these amazing historic photos from the 1930s, but it will get the job done!

Thanks for Jim Moore’s Oregonian feature on bicycling as a tourist in Monterey. I love our tourists, and yet, the more visitors biking with me here (and the fewer cars), the better! Please stay safely visible when you leave our Monterey Bay Coastal Trail and are sharing the roads with cars. Forgot your neon clothing and not near a bike shop? Granite Construction’s public stores are also well-equipped with highly visible clothing–neon cotton t-shirts and much more, with or without their company logo.
